The 17th of October was the Global Day of Action Against Poverty. The day was marked in Palestine with a set of activities, yet never reached as many people as it should. However, while we should remember that awareness is good, action is important!
Apart from a few initiatives here and there (and one UNDP project), nothing is happening in Palestine on the issue of poverty. Everyone suffers, and very few are actually committed to changing the situation.
Most of the Gaza Strip population is surviving on food handouts from the various charities, and significant proportion of West Bank households are doing the same. The situation is shocking, yet it still is not as close as in other countries.
Maybe this is a very harsh way to describe the situation. I am sure cannibalism wasn't that prevalent."The curse of poverty has no justification in our age. It is socially as cruel and blind as the practice of cannibalism at the dawn of civilization, when men ate each other because they had not yet learned to take food from the soil or to consume the abundant animal life around them. The time has come for us to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition of poverty."
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
